Glenohumeral arthroplasty is accepted as the treatment of choice for symptomatic severe rheumatoid arthritis of the shoulder.
Results of total shoulder arthroplasty have been good at an average of ten years.
In the early 1980s, the Copeland cementless surface replacement arthroplasty, a surface replacement designed specifically for use in arthritic shoulders, was introduced.
This replacement differs from the stemmed shoulder prostheses.
It replaces only the damaged joint-bearing surfaces and restores anatomy with minimal bone resection. It consists of a humeral head surface replacement cup with a short central peg. When the humeral head is prepared, only the peripheral osteophytes are removed and minimal trimming for reshaping the humeral head for the prosthesis is performed.
In recent years, with the introduction of the reverse total shoulder replacement, improved results with better range of motion and function can be achieved even in cases with severe rotator cuff deficiency.
