Robert Bull (NHS patient)'s Story

Patients' Experiences

This section has been added to enable us to provide patients with a more complete overview of the surgical and rehabilitation experience. It comprises letters from patients regarding their overall surgical experience, and supplements the information provided by the medical team...a bit like talking to someone who has undergone a similar treatment to one that you may have been recommended. We hope the patients' viewpoint is useful to you and would appreciate any similar feedback, which may be put onto the website for the purpose of patient- assisted consent.

    Comments: Dear Prof Levy

Further to our conversation last week I would like to offer my sincere thanks for the treatment I have received at The Reading Shoulder Hospital recently (Reverso shoulder replacement).

My operation was due to take place in May but due to a slight blip in procedures to check my heart, my operation took place on 7th August.

From my initial meeting with your team some months ago I have had first class treatment i.e. from your secretary, the receptionist, the administrators, the medical staff, the physiotherapist etc. etc.

On the day of my operation I arrived feeling exceptionally anxious as I’m 81 years old and had never been in hospital before and had never had an anaesthetic. However, all members of your team put me at ease and offered me the support I needed and the operation went well.

I remained in hospital for two nights and during that time I was given first class treatment from all members of your team.

A day after my discharge from hospital my wife called the ward as I was slightly worried about my shoulder. The nurse reassured me all was well but said if I was still worried I could return to the ward and speak to a nurse. The following morning a nurse very kindly telephoned my home to check all was well.

Following my discharge I have had appointments with your physiotherapist (Luke) who, with great care and professionalism has guided me through my exercise routines. Again, he has offered me the support and reassurance I need.

Initially I was slightly unsure of how the replacement shoulder would work, but I needn’t have worried. Although the operation was only 6 weeks ago, the wound on my shoulder is healing very well and I’m sure will improve even more over time. I follow my exercise regime daily and already after such a short time I have considerable movement in my arm and have very little pain. I am delighted.

Prof Levy, I would like to thank you for the amazing operation you carried out on my shoulder and for the first class treatment I have received from you and all your team.

    Thank you.
    Kind regards.

(Perhaps you should run the NHS!!)
