John 's Story
Patients' Experiences
This section has been added to enable us to provide patients with a more complete overview of the surgical and rehabilitation experience. It comprises letters from patients regarding their overall surgical experience, and supplements the information provided by the medical team...a bit like talking to someone who has undergone a similar treatment to one that you may have been recommended. We hope the patients' viewpoint is useful to you and would appreciate any similar feedback, which may be put onto the website for the purpose of patient- assisted consent.

Thank you for seeing me on Saturday. For the rehabilitation of the right shoulder I would like to say a special word of thanks to the physio unit and in particular Lawrence Sonvico who has greatly assisted me. After the procedure the ward physios gave me a good overview of how the rehab would go. I saw Lawrence
for the first time at three weeks. In a one hour appointment he went through the principles of the rehab process including the importance of gaining RoM, building up cuff strength and maintaining good scapular position. He showed me via models. Understanding the principles helped enourmously in the period week 3 to week 9 whilst I was in Tunis. The range and appropriateness of the regime also helped the rehab by targetting exactly what was required and not wasting energy on unrelated muscles or functions. During this six week period Lawrence was very helpful in reviewing videos showing scapular progression and commenting on weekly status updates. The rehab process went well aided by geting RoM early at approx 4 weeks helped by frequent use of a pool and swimmimg in the sea. A float helped a lot. We had one telephone appointment which was very helpful. At 6 weeks I was back in the gym and Lawrence advised what I could and should not do. At 8 weeks I had played 18 holes of golf carrying my bag (lightweight).
Lawrence then wrote to my physio in Aberdeen who took over at week 9. We are now working on variety of strengthening and shoulder stability work including pressups and combined single arm rows with weights and using unstable surfaces.
All in all I am very satisfied by the surgery, hospital care and staff and the Physio unit.
With many thanks
John
